A Safer Danger May 23, 2008

Overheard outside the neighboring police headquarters this morning:

…with all the mutilated bodies coming out of these little cars, you just know you don’t wanna ride around in one of those.

Right. But one has to wonder if just maybe the unnecessarily monstrous vehicles people choose to drive instead might ironically have a little something to do with that terrible fate for drivers of small cars.

From the little I could gather, the above statement came out of a conversation that seemed to be about hybrid vehicle options. Presumably, they were talking about the larger mid-size and full-size hybrid options, and if so, the statement might have been referring to the smallest of the small hybrid cars; I’m not sure. But even so, the point is if you move all the way up to a large SUV, as many have done over concern for safety, then you could possibly become one of the very dangers to small vehicles on the road you are attempting to protect yourself from. So I have never really understood how people can so often talk casually about the dangers of small vehicles and praise the safety of oversize vehicles without seeming to make any connection between the two or show much concern for the dangers those oversize vehicles – for all their supposed safety within – can pose to people outside of them.
